श्री संभाजी राजे (भाग पहिला: महाराणी सती पुतळाबाई)
श्री शिवाजी
सावंत यांचे मराठी साहित्यात अनमोल योगदान आहे. त्यांच्या मृत्युंजय, छावा, युगंधर
या कादंबऱ्या चिरंतन, सुंदर आणि पवित्र आहेत. प्रत्येक भारतीयाने हि पुस्तके विकत घेतली
पाहिजेत आणि वाचली पाहिजेत. आपल्या मुलांना शाळांमधून आपले खरे भारतीय शूरवीर फार कमी
शिकवले जातात आणि परकीय आक्रमक मुघलांचे गुणगान शालेय अभ्यासक्रमातून होते हि शरमेची
गोष्ट आहे. आपणच छावा सारखी पुस्तके वाचली पाहिजेत आणि इतरांना ती वाचण्यासाठी प्रोत्साहित
केले पाहिजे.
छावा मध्ये
श्री संभाजी राजांच्या तेजस्वी उदात्त जीवनाचा कालखंड आहे. (१६५७ ते १६८९). एका उदार
मनाच्या पराक्रमी लढवैय्या कवीची हि प्रेरणादायी गोष्ट. प्रत्येक बाबतीत श्री संभाजी
राजे हे महादेव रुद्रासारखेच आहेत - महा शक्तिशाली, अति उदार, अतिशय देखणे, कलाप्रेमी,
पराक्रमी आणि खऱ्या अर्थाने एक आदर्श भारतीय योद्धा.
मी छावा अनेक
वेळा वाचलेलं आहे. छावा म्हणजे - सिंहपुत्र. खरोखरच श्री शिवाजी महाराजां
सारख्या सिंहाचे पुत्र श्री संभाजी राजे यांना छावा हि उपाधी शोभून दिसते. हे पुस्तक आपल्याला अगदी साक्षात त्या कालखंडात
घेऊन जाते. जेव्हा आपण वाचतो तेव्हा आपण त्याच काळात आहोत असे वाटते. या पुस्तकातील
प्रत्येक पात्राचे व्यक्तिचित्रण अतिशय प्रामाणिक आणि भुरळ पडणारे आहे, आणि हेच लेखकाचे
खूप मोठे यश आहे.
इथे या लेखाचा
पहिला भाग महाराणी सती पुतळाबाई यांना समर्पित आहे.
महाराणी सती
पुतळाबाई या श्री शिवाजी महाराज यांच्या तृतीय पत्नी. त्या पालकर घराण्याच्या कन्या,
१६५३ मध्ये त्यांचा विवाह झाला. पुढे त्या श्री शिवाजी महाराजांच्या मृत्यू नंतर सती
गेल्या. त्यांची निष्ठा, त्याग, संपूर्ण परिवाराला एकत्र धरून ठेवण्यासाठी केलेली धडपड,
एक राणी, एक पत्नी आणि एक आई म्हणून त्यांनी बजावलेले कर्तव्य या सगळ्यांसाठीच त्या
सदैव आदरास पात्र राहतील.
खर तर त्यांच्या
सारख्या राणीलाच जास्त अधिकार मिळायला हवे होते. पण आपल्या परिवारातून आणि समाजातून
सर्वोत्तम व्यक्तीलाच सर्वात जास्त त्याग करावा लागतो, नेहमीच. जर त्यांच्या सारख्या
राणीला जास्त सत्ता आणि कार्यक्षेत्र मिळाले असते तर कदाचित इतिहास काहीसा वेगळाच असता.
मंदिरातल्या समई आणि फुलांसारख्या त्या पवित्र आहेत, माता भवानी सारख्याच त्या भक्तांचे
सारे अपराध पोटात घालून लेकरांना उदंड यश देणाऱ्या वाटतात.
पुस्तकात
जेव्हा त्यांच्या सती जाण्याचा प्रसंग येतो आणि श्री संभाजी राजांबरोबर त्यांच्या शेवटच्या
संभाषणचा प्रसंग आपण वाचतो तेव्हा आपल्याला काय वाटत हे शब्दात सांगायची माझी पात्रताच
नाही. ते वाचताना काय आणि कस वाटलं हे मी सांगूच शकत नाही. एखाद्या योग्यासारखं, एखाद्या
पराक्रमी लढवैय्या सारखं त्या सती गेल्या. देव आणि मानवाच्या केविलवाण्या आवाहनांना
ऐकून पृथ्वीवर प्रगटलेल्या दुर्गादेवी सारख्या त्या भासतात. प्राचीन सनातन हिंदू धर्माची
ज्योत सदैव तेवत ठेवणाऱ्या पवित्र अग्नी सारख्या त्या भासतात. पुत्र श्री संभाजी राजांच्याच
हातून मुखाग्नी घेण्याचा त्या आग्रह करतात. उदार आणि पराक्रमी श्री संभाजी राजांसाठी
किती कठीण प्रसंग असावा तो, पुत्र म्हणून हे धर्म कर्तव्य निभावताना काय वाटलं असेल
राजांच्या मनाला. त्यांचे शेवटचे शब्द 'पुत्र आहात तुम्ही आमचे हे सदैव स्मरणात ठेवा'
- मला हे मंत्रघोषच वाटतात. सावत्र असूनही
त्यांनी सदैव श्री संभाजी राजांना सख्या आई प्रमाणे सांभाळलं. त्यांच्यासाठी त्या सख्या
मातोश्री महाराणी सईबाईंपेक्षा काही कमी नव्हत्या. मला वाटत महाराणी सती पुतळाबाईंचं
हे सती रूप आणि हे शेवटचे बोल श्री संभाजी राजांच्या हृदयात कायमचे कोरले गेले असतील.
शेवटी जेव्हा त्या माथेफिरू जिहादी औरंगझेबाने छळ करून राजांचा वध केला तेव्हाही राजांनी
याच देवीसमान महाराणी सती पुतळाबाईंचे स्मरण केले असेल. त्या देवीच्या त्यागाने आणि
सतीत्वाने त्यांना बाळ दिले त्यामुळे राजांनी पापी औरंगझेबाचे राजांना इस्लाम कबूल
करावयास लावण्याचे प्रयत्न निष्फळ केले, उधळून लावले. शेवटी राजांनी प्राणत्याग केला
पण पापी औरंगझेबापुढे त्यांनी हार मानली नाही - कारण महाराणी सती पुतळाबाईंनी शेवटी
खरेच सांगितले होते ‘राजे एका पराक्रमी आणि पवित्र तेजस्वी आईचे पुत्र होते’.
श्री शिवाजी
महाराज आणि महाराणी सती पुतळाबाईंचे पुत्र पराक्रमी योद्धे कवी श्री संभाजी राजे यांचे
स्मरण करण्यासाठी आपण छावा हि कादंबरी वाचलीच पाहिजे.

Sambhaji Raaje Part One: Maharani Sati Putalabai Raje
Shree Shivaji
Sawant has made incredible contributions in the Marathi literature. His novels
‘Mrityunjay’, ‘Yugandhar’ and ‘Chava’ are eternal, beautiful and pious. Every
Indian must buy these books and read them. It’s a shame that our children do
not get to read about our real heroes and they have to study the biased glories
of the Mughal invaders. We must urge our people to read books like ‘Chava’.
Chava reveals the
era from 1657 to 1689, the entire lifespan of Shree Sambhaji Raje is a luminous
story of a great warrior poet who is kind hearted as well as brave among the
bravest. In every sense he is like Mahadev Rudra – who is the most powerful, the
most generous, the most handsome, the most artistic and a true Indian Hero.
I have read ‘Chava’
multiple times. ‘Chava’ means a lion cub. Indeed Shree Sambhaji Raje was a lion
cub being a son of a great lion-like king Shree Shivaji Maharaj. The book
literary takes us to that period. When we read we feel; as if we are part of
that time. The portrayal of all the characters in this book is very sincere and
mesmerizing and that is a great success of the writer.
Part one of this article is dedicated
to Maharani Sati Putalabai
Maharani Sati
Putalabai – was the third queen of Shree Shivaji Maharaj. She was married to him in the
year 1653 and was from Palkar Family. She went sati in funeral pyre of Shree Shivaji Maharaj. Her devotion, her sacrifice,
her efforts to take everybody in the family together and her commitment towards
her responsibilities as a queen, as a wife and as a mother is praiseworthy even
today.
A queen like her should have got more
authority – isn’t this happen all the time in our families & society too
that somebody who is earnest has to make all the sacrifices. If someone like
her would have got more space & power then the history would have been
different. She is as pious as a lamp & flowers in the temple, she is like a
mother goddess Bhavani who forgives all the sins and in return bless her
children with all possible boons.
The chapter in the book when she went
sati – that entire process and her last conversation with Shree Sambhaji Raje is an
experience and realization beyond our capacity to explain. I fail to describe
how & what I felt. She went sati with determination like a yogi & a warrior,
she was like goddess Durga appearing on earth after listening to appeals of
gods & humans – she was that fire which kept the light of the ancient sanaatan
hindu dharma alive. She insisted to get the mukhagni from her son Shree
Sambhaji Raje. How hard it would have been for the kindhearted and brave Shree
Sambhaji Raje to perform that duty as a son. Her last words to him just before
going sati – “always remember you are MY son” are not less than any mantra.
Though she was Shree Sambhaji Raje’s step mother she always supported him as her
own child. She was no less than his own mother Maharani Sai Bai. I believe
Maharani Sati Putalabai’s last look as sati and her last words would have
remained in Shree Sambhaji Raj’es heart forever. In end when the jihadi psycho
Aurangazeb tortured Shree Sambhaji Raje till death – Raje must have remembered
the godly Maharani Sati Putalabai. Her strength & sacrifice would have
given him the power to fight and abolish the fruitless efforts of Aurangazeb to
convert Raje to Islam. Shree Sambhaji Raje died in the end but he did not
surrender to the sinner Aurangazeb, after all Maharani Sati Putalabai was right
– Shree Sambhaji Raaje was the son of a courageous pious lady.
We must read ‘Chava’ to remember the
great warrior poet Shree Sambhaji Raje son of Shree Shivaji Maharaj and
Maharani Sati Putalabai.
